The authors reported a case of chronic schizophrenia manifested, among many other schizophrenicsymptoms, by complete mutism and aphonia persisted for 14 years.
A course of E. C. T. and a trial of Amytal Interview did not prove effective in bringing him to verbal communication. After 3 months of total push method including psychotropic drugs, E. C. T. , milieu therapies and individual and group therapies, a series of speech training was started to which the patient showed an immediate response of vocalization and a gradual restoration of verbal communication.
Subsquently the improvement of overall schizophrenic symptoms were more or less promoted by establishment of verbal communication and it¢¥s facilitation of supportive psychotherapeutic efforts. The authors suggest further studies of such behavioral therapeutic approach for chronic schizophrenics.
